EtaVolt, a spin-off from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, has developed a new technology that rejuvenates aging solar panels and protects them from the damaging effects of light and heat. This technology addresses a crucial challenge in the solar energy industry, especially in tropical regions like Singapore, where solar panels are highly susceptible to rapid deterioration due to harsh environmental conditions.

The Problem of Solar Panel Degradation

Solar panels usually experience a decline in efficiency shortly after installation, with the first year being particularly crucial. Factors such as environmental conditions can cause a performance drop of up to 10% or more over the lifespan of the panels, leading to significant energy loss on a global level.

EtaVolt’s Advanced Regeneration Technology

EtaVolt’s Advanced Regeneration Technology rejuvenates solar panels by energizing old solar cells with multiple times the intensity of sunlight. This process repairs damage caused by light and heat and can also protect solar panels from future degradation. This technology has been field-tested and is compatible with approximately 90% of existing photovoltaic (PV) panels.

How the Rejuvenation Process Works

The rejuvenation device automatically rolls over solar panels up to 2.3 meters in length, completing the process in less than five minutes. It stimulates the material molecules in the solar cells, rearranging them to fix any “holes” and prevent energy leakage, ensuring optimal light energy collection. Treated solar panels can regain up to 5% of their lost field performance, and the technology can prevent further degradation for up to five years, depending on the panel type.

Impact and Future Prospects

EtaVolt’s technology not only enhances the efficiency of solar panels but also contributes to sustainable energy practices by potentially extending the operational lifespan of solar panels. The company, founded in 2019 by Dr. Stanley Wang and Dr. Andy So, is incubated by EcoLabs Centre of Innovation for Energy at ERI@N, aiming to accelerate deep-tech energy innovation in Singapore. As the demand for renewable energy grows, EtaVolt’s solution could play a crucial role in maximizing the potential of solar power and supporting a more sustainable future.
